Glossary of Internet Terms

Analytics – Website analytics use a code embedded in a website to track the site’s traffic. Most analytic programs, such as Google analytics, for example, will track: where visitors are coming from, how long they stayed on your site, how many and what pages they viewed, where they are from – down to the city, what language they speak, and how they found you.

Alt Tag – Short for Alternative text tag, this HTML attribute is attached to an image to tell visitors and search engines what the image is. An Alt tag will also appear when an image, photo or graphic cannot be displayed.

Directories – Here we are referring to the group of directories called online directories. These types of directories are online services that allow you to submit business and website listing information to be listed in specific categories of their online directory. These directory listings can be free or paid, depending on the service, and may or may not allow images and logos to be added. The online directory is then viewable and searchable by the general public, or restricted to members of that directory.

HTML – HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This is the unseen language that tells the Internet how to display and format documents, images, links, colors, text and more.

Landing Page – Technically, a landing page is any page that a visitor can visit. However, this term is usually meant as a web page existing for some specific purpose to result in a desired action. Landing pages in this sense are often used as sales pages or some sort of informational page with the goal of getting the visitor to take further action, such as signing up for an email list or scheduling an appointment.

Search engine results often display this information as the description for a page’s information, such as in the example here.

Title Tag – A title tag is an HTML attribute that provides a concise description for a given page, and is one of the most important factors to SEO. These tags range from 50-60 characters, contain keywords for your website, and are displayed in search engine results.
